Be The Change

i scroll through facebook bombarded with images, stories, commentary about various issues that i'm incredibly moved by. school lunches, voting rights, healthcare (that was just yesterday) plastered all over my newsfeed. i share away and comment and 'like' but long to do more. there's only so much we can 'share' on social media. there comes a time when it's no longer enough (it's never really been enough).

turning words and passion in to action is something that's incredibly overwhelming in a time where everything i hold dear seems to be under attack. there are so many ways to get involved, so many organizations, volunteer opportunities, programs. enough to make me want to hide back behind my laptop and keep sharing. when your heart beats for issues across the board, it seems impossible to narrow it down and pick one or two things to really pour yourself in to.

last week i signed up to run the golden gate half marathon with every mother counts. i'll be running to raise money and awareness for safer pregnancy and childbirth. i'm running anyway. i run about 10miles each week when i'm not training for a race. i run for my mental health, my sanity, to get outside and be alone. to feel the ocean breeze on my face without worrying about the baby eating sand. i'm running anyway. why not run for a cause?

303,000 women die each year due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth. that's 2 every minute.

For each of these deaths, an average of four orphans are left behind.

Pregnancy is a leading causes of death in women ages 15-19 in the developing world.

For every woman who dies each year in childbirth, 20-30 more suffer from lifelong debilitating complications.

We lose two women per day here in the United States. The United States ranks 60th in the world for its maternal mortality rate, even though it spends more on health care per capita than any other nation in the world.

Want to get involved? Here's 2 simple ways:

you can donate to my fundraising page HERE. any little bit helps. trade your daily latte and donate those $4 dollars. skip the car wash this week and donate that $10. you can make a difference with whatever you can contribute.

every mother counts has ambassadors running races all over the world. since distance is the biggest factor contributing to getting care mothers need, we run. we run for those who can't. we run so we can close that gap between mothers and the care they deserve. we run. and you can too. join us HERE
