Recipe | Matcha Tea Latte


It's the hot "it drink" right now isn't it? 

Everyone is talking about matcha lattes and your Instagram feed is probably littered with photos of cute green frothy mugs of this drink.

If you haven't tried it or have and want to know a little more and how to make one at home you've come to the right place.


What is matcha?

So matcha is a special kind of green tea. Most teas you place leaves in a container to be diffused in hot water and the leaves are then discarded. With matcha, you're using a powder which is actually the leaves which have been finely powdered to make a solution that dissolves quickly in hot (just before boiling) water. 

Because you're ingesting the actual leaves you're getting loads of bonus yummy ingredients and not just a tasty drink. Matcha provides a small amount of a few vitamins and minerals but what it really packs a punch in is the antioxidants. These little guys can provide protection against heart disease and cancer, as well as better blood sugar regulation, blood pressure reduction, and anti-aging. So a magical little green fellow, huh?

Matcha does contain caffeine because, again, you're getting the actual leaf component. It works out to about the same caffeine as a cup of brewed coffee. If you're thinking 'shoot I was trying to get off caffeine!' you're probably going to like how this tea makes you feel. Matcha creates an “alert calm” due to a natural substance called l-theanine, which induces relaxation without the crash and drowsiness that often comes a few hours after that afternoon jolt of joe.


Ready to make some yourself? 

I've tried a handful of recipes around the internet and I didn't love what I was getting. It's all about the milk. I've tried coconut, almond, hazelnut and combinations of each. Some were too dense, some too watery, some too sweet or not sweet enough. I experimented with a lot of different plant milks to land on this recipe that makes my afternoon caffeine fix hit just the right spot and it's all about the macadamia nut. It's creamy but not heavy, sweet but in a subtle way, and still has that frothy green beauty worth of an IG photo ;) 


1 1/4 cup macadamia nut milk

1 1/4 cup hot water

1 tsp matcha powder

honey or agave syrup to taste

1. Place matcha in a mug or heat-proof container and splash a little bit of warm water on top. Whisk with a bamboo whisk (I love this one) in an up and down motion until you get a thick green paste.

2. Heat milk over the stove or in the microwave & water in a kettle on the stovetop.

3. Pour milk and water in to the mug with matcha paste in a 1:1 ratio and stir. *reserve a little milk to froth for that extra pretty finish*

4. Add just a little honey or agave if needed. I use about 1/2 tsp to sweeten mine.
